“Padellone” (big frying pan) was a name given by Italian collectors due to the size and shape of the dial and case. The model was made in a limited series of approximately 1500 examples between 1949 and 1952 with steel consisting of around 800 pieces and the rest in yellow gold and rose gold. The majority production of this piece in steel is a interesting proposition as the watchmaking industry starts to transit from making elegant dress watches using precious metals, to sporty tool watches with steel at the end of World War II. It was the jet age and things tend to look shiny, sleek and tool-ish. The Rolex Padellone Ref.8171 definitely manifested a modern and evergreen size and design that even today, makes for a desirable timepiece. The most interested appeal of this collectible vintage would be the fact that this is one of only two reference from Rolex to come with a triple-calendar complication, until the introduction of the Cellini collection.
